Pixelmon is a Minecraft mod that transforms it into a Pokémon-inspired world.

Minecraft may be the most successful sandbox video games of all time. It is beloved by children and adults alike and had an effect on the industry that is still felt today. The creative element is one aspect that helped make Minecraft as popular as it is. Players can shape their experience by creating new objects to use and even define the rules for the environment on their particular servers.

Minecraft mods are the most ambitious of these additions. A mod will often include many items and creatures but also change the visuals and even gameplay itself. Pixelmon is one such mod. It was introduced about a year after Minecraft released and soon became one of the most popular Minecraft mods around. A lot of that was due to how popular Pokémon was and still is. Fans loved the idea of traversing a Pokémon-themed world, and execution was fantastic for a non-official experience.

Installing and configuring mods can be a bit tricky depending on how much control you want. Nevertheless, basic installation via various installation assistants ensures that even the most technically-challenged Minecraft and Pokémon fans will get a default instance up and running. These assistants will even create a Pixelmon-specific shortcut so that you can launch it with just one click.

Perhaps the greatest allure of Pokémon is summed up in this famous slogan: Gotta catch ‘em all! Fans want to catch Pokémon, and at last count, Pixelmon offered more than 140 distinct species to catch. Not only do you catch them, but you train them and battle them. These Pokémon even evolve like in the official titles, and that gives them new abilities. The battle system is quite robust too but is much more enjoyable when playing against another human opponent in our experience.

The entire environment is Pokémon inspired as well, and although it is not based off one particular location in the games or shows, fans will notice many different inspirations throughout. You also have the option of adding to it and eventually making your ideal Pokémon environment. Be mindful that you do need the Java version of Minecraft, which is a paid game. Without it, Pixelmon will not do anything at all because it relied on that executable.

Pixelmon is no longer supported, unfortunately. The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, its publisher, are very protective of this intellectual property and issued a takedown notice to the developer. The developer is small and largely unpaid, which made impractical to challenge these companies. The mod download is still available. You can install it and use it locally. But there will be no new content or further refinements, and it is unclear whether publicly accessible Pixelmon servers will be challenged.
